Wellness Wednesday Tips
Are you taking supplements and herbal preparations thinking they are safe? It may be time to re-think why you’re taking them, and to consider whether they are beneficial or downright dangerous. Recent research published in the journal Hepatology (doi: 10.1002/hep.27317) found that injury to the liver has increased by 7-20% in the U.S. over a 10-year period. The culprit? Herbal and dietary supplements. Consumer assume because they are natural they are safe. This is a case of buyer beware. Make sure your doctor is on board with your choices, and make sure you buy brand names that have the USP seal, which means they have been vetted for purity and to have the ingredients they claim to have, in safe dosages.
Quick tip: Use your birthday or the New Year as a yearly reminder to get age-appropriate screenings including: blood pressure, waist size and BMI, cholesterol, fasting blood sugar and a1c measurement, colonoscopy (age 50 or older), baseline mammogram ( talk to your doctor about the appropriate age) or routine follow up, PAP smear, osteoporosis screening (talk to your doctor about risk factors and appropriate age for screening).
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
