SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Endowment’s WE Connect program, in partnership with Sacramento Building Healthy Communities, HealthCorps, the Intuit Financial Freedom Foundation and local community organizations, continued its campaign to enroll thousands of eligible California residents in affordable health coverage and link them to valuable money saving resources. The free community resource fair brought together more than 3,500 residents and is part of The Endowment’s efforts to educate Californians on the Affordable Care Act and help ensure successful implementation of the groundbreaking legislation.

Individuals and families received free enrollment assistance for low-cost and no-cost health coverage programs like Medi-Cal and the county-run Low-Income Health Plan (LIHP), as well as free tax preparation services.  “WE Connect and its partner organizations have helped thousands of people, not just through health care enrollment, but by making the connection to other resources that can help individuals and families long after this event is over,” said Kelly Bennett-Wofford, executive director of Sacramento Covered.

Other services included interactive health and wellness booths, free basic medical and dental screenings, and a healthy food giveaway for the first 2,000 families. “Events like this are a great way for HealthCorps to further its mission by bringing together the community and show people that the tools to maintain a healthy lifestyle can be simple and fun,” said Michelle Bouchard, President of HealthCorps.  In addition to screenings and resources, there was live entertainment throughout the day by Radio Disney, Sacramento Kings Talent, Yoga Across America, and a Teen Battle Chef competition.

The Computer & Communications Industry Association and Sacramento County Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program were on hand to offer free tax preparation for local families that made less than $51,000 in 2012. “The Sacramento WE Connect event was a great opportunity for people to receive help filing their taxes and claim important tax credits, like the Earned Income Tax Credit, in a positive environment,” said Erin Moos, Senior Manager, Intuit Financial Freedom Foundation, creator of WE Connect’s WEb Connector. The WEb Connector, which was the first stop for attendees at the event, is an online tool that helps families navigate which money-saving programs they may be eligible for and how to apply.

“Our goal is to help people understand the opportunities available to them now and in 2014 when the health care law is fully implemented, and to arm them with the resources to take full advantage of them,” said Sacramento Building Healthy Communities Hub Director Kim Williams. “We believe health happens with prevention and successful implementation of the Affordable Care Act is in line with our mission to expand affordable, preventative care to millions of Californians.”

About WE Connect

WE Connect was established by former California First Lady Maria Shriver in 2005. The Program is now run by The California Endowment with Lt. Governor Newsom’s leadership, continued funding and in-kind support from Intuit and the Intuit Financial Freedom Foundation and partnership with La Opinion. WE Connect joins The Endowment in challenging conventional wisdom that health solely happens in the doctor’s office. Health Happens in Schools, in Neighborhoods and with Prevention. WE Connect empowers families in underserved communities to lead healthier and more financially secure lives by connecting them to resources such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, California’s Healthy Families Program and CalFresh. This nationwide campaign connects those eligible with the information and tools they need to access these valuable resources. The program has successfully resulted in helping millions of Californians through its community events, web-based tools, public-private partnerships, and collateral materials.
