Walking to School is Uber-healthy

Posted 10/30/2013 | By HealthCorps

Tracking your steps and trying to hit a daily goal of 10,000 steps daily can help to support a healthy weight and overall health.  So if your kids can walk to school safely, they are well on their way to embracing a lifestyle habit that can help to set the stage for lifelong health.  Biking to school is another fitness choice that will help to burn calories and energize your child, helping them to reach the 60-90 minutes of daily exercise recommended by current health standards.

The Safe Routes to Schools (http://www.saferoutesinfo.org/) program offers information for schools, parents and communities including:

  • Accessing Walking and Biking to School Planning and Outreach Materials
  • How Walking and Biking to School can meet Healthy Schools Program and Let’s Move! Active Schools Framework Criteria
  • Resources provided by the new Fire Up Your Feet Program, a collaboration between Kaiser Permanente, National Parent Teacher Association, and Safe Routes to School National Partnership

Get inspired and walk your kids to school or nudge those teens to walk or bike to high school daily.
