Walk for your Health
A walking program can provide a myriad of health benefits. It’s also a good fit for people who want to begin exercising, and for pregnant women and aging individuals. When it comes to fighting diabetes, just walking a half mile daily may lower your risk.
Researchers studied 92 subjects who did not have diabetes. The participants wore pedometers and recorded their total steps daily on two typical days, five years apart. Every ½ mile increase (about 1000 steps) correlated with a lower BMI and higher insulin sensitivity, which correlates with lower blood sugar levels.
The take-away message is that even moderate amounts of exercise can be the key to preventing the expression of certain health conditions.
