Today is Love Your Pet Day
Did you know that…
Dogs may actually protect babies against allergies and asthma. Mice exposed to dust from households where dogs were allowed to regularly go outdoors, showed a change and shift in their gut microbes, and had reduced allergic responses to well-known allergy triggers. So the theory is, that kids in homes with dogs, are more likely to develop intestinal bacteria that provide better immunity against many common pathogens.
We’ve posted blogs in the past that discuss the benefit of walking your dog – it helps you to commit to fitness and it can help your dog’s “waistline” too. Make it one of your New Year’s Resolutions!
Cats can be good for our health too. A research study showed that both dog and cat owners seem to have reduced rates of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The longer the duration of pet ownership, the less chance the pet owner will develop this disease.
Pets like dogs and cats can also offer companionship and comfort, which may have direct benefits on one’s health, both physically and mentally.
So in honor of today’s “Love your Pet Day,” do love your pet today, and make sure to play with them or to take them for a long walk – you’ll both reap the benefits!
