US House and Senate Pass Education Bills

Students Showcase Talents at Farm-to-Fork Event in Stockton, California

On July 16, the United States Senate passed the Every Child Achieves Act by a vote of 81 to 17.

The bill is the bipartisan agreement by Senate education committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Ranking Member Patty Murray (D-Wash.) to fix the No Child Left Behind law. Earlier in the month, the US House passed its education bill, the Student Success Act.

The Senate bill includes both health and physical education as core academic subjects, as well as the Physical Education Program (PEP) grant, as an authorized program. The House bill does not contain these provisions.

HealthCorps has been an active voice on Capitol Hill advocating for the inclusion of health and physical education in federal education law and the continuation of the PEP program.

The bills now move to conference to align elements in each. HealthCorps will continue to work with lawmakers to ensure the health and physical education elements remain in the final bill.
