September 2018: Letter From the President
Dear HealthCorps Family,
As usual, HealthCorps is in innovation mode. Last Tuesday, philanthropists, educators, heads of NGO’s, wellness experts and more gathered at the United Way in Houston to share and garner practical life skills at the first ever HealthCorps Day of Wellness. It was fun, incredibly informative, and it was a privilege to participate with so many folks contributing to making Houston a stronger community. We also added new partner-sponsors such as Holthouse Foundation for Kids and Tea & Coffee America to the HealthCorps family. Several statements of the day really got me to the core:
“Your relationship with food is one of the most revealing relationships in your life,”
HealthCorps Ambassador, Delphine Remy
“Because that is the right thing to do,”
Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale upon being asked why he opened up his stores to displaced Houstonians during Hurricane Harvey.
Working at HealthCorps is akin to permanently attending a university. We are learning all the time. For instance, the Chickasaw Nation taught us the critical need for parents/caregivers to sit down and share a meal and conversation on a regular basis. It could be one of the most important factors in lowering at-risk behavior in young people. Our San Bernardino and Kentucky coalition partners have taught us the need for public-private partnerships in addressing societal issues. We continue to learn from Board members like Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Oz. We continue to learn from Albert Einstein School of Medicine how to better measure our impact.
We hope to be of value to your ongoing life education as well. Please take time to check out our new one-page tip sheets and short presentations added recently to the resources section of our curriculum and share with your family, community, and co-workers. Consider joining at sites around the country for our school health fairs or events such as National Night of Conversation and Texas Two Step CPR.
Look for some exciting announcements this winter as we continue to enhance our ability to share more skills and tools with students, educators and the public and YOU!
