Poofy Organics – Our newest partner

With the Savory Garden Gala  about a week away, it’s time to feature another company that has recently come on board to help provide a unique item in our featured Gala gift bag.  Poofy Organics offers a range of skin care, hair care and household products for the whole family.  With safe ingredients and a production process done by hand, we decided to profile this special company.

Can you tell me a bit about the evolution of Poofy Organics?

After my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, she came home and told me that her oncologist told her to ditch her antiperspirant and look for something without parabens.  Our family had already begun eating in a whole-food organic way, but we had never thought about the products we put on our skin.  I began to research the ingredients and what I saw amazed and disgusted me.  The more I read, the more I was determined to change our choices.  My husband came home the next day, after I had been on the computer all day, and I had assembled a huge box of all our personal care products, ready for garbage pickup.

I didn’t know what we were going to use, but I knew we weren’t going to use toxic chemicals.  I found some companies with products that I considered using, but they were only available through the internet, and pretty expensive.  That’s when I decided to make my own products.  Through extensive research, I figured the public needed simple, good quality products that would also be affordable.  That was in May 2008.  We began with a few products when we launched the website, working out of my basement, and slowly expanded until we opened our retail location in November of 2010.

Now, we have hundreds of products, and we have expanded our location and also launched a direct sales division of the company.  We currently have 79 consultants, called DIVAs, who represent our products.  We have about a dozen private label customers and we also sell wholesale to pediatricians, doctors, chiropractors, birthing centers and other retail locations.  We are certified USDA organic and make everything by hand at our Rutherford, NJ location.

How did you come up specifically with the name?

I call my daughter POOFY because of her poofy hair.  The ladybug logo is also connected to my daughter because she was always my little ladybug.  We colored the logo green to go with the theme of being green.

Are there specific chemicals and toxins that are in many of the skincare and hair care products we use that concern you?

Wow, there are so many, but the ones that really stand out are parabens (anything with Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl), propylene glycol, Triclosan, Benzoyl Peroxide, Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolomine (TEA), Sulfates- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), DMDM Hydantoin, Formaldehyde, Camphor, Pthalates, Mineral Oil, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Perfume (parfume), FRAGRANCE, FD&C Color pigments, Dioxin and general toxic preservatives.  Additionally, chemicals in antiperspirants such as aluminum, the fluoride in toothpaste, and sunscreen ingredients such as Para Amino Benzoic Acid, Octyl Salicyclate, Avobenzone, Padimate O, Phenylbenzmidazole, Oxybenzone or 4-MBC.  Of course, these are just a handful of the thousands of chemicals that are in products and the concern is that they remain untested for their (possible) harmful effects on people and the environment.  Many ingredients that have been subjected to clinical testing continue to remain in products, despite the research.

Can you describe some of the many products you offer, and why they are safer and superior in quality?

We have quite a variety of products including a baby line (Baby Poof), a kids line (Young, WILD & free) and a men’s line (Ruggedly Natural).  What makes us stand out from the typical “natural” products is a combination factors.  We use ZERO toxic chemicals.  If you take a look at EWG (Environmental Working Group) SkinDeep database, you will see that products rate 0-10 based on their list of ingredients.  On the scale, 0 is safe, 10 is hazardous.  Almost all our products achieve a rating of “0.”  We will NOT make a product, if it cannot meet the healthy standards we have determined.  All the ingredients we use are specifically chosen to ensure that the product is safe, and also to ensure that it the product is effective.  We employ major research into any product we intend to launch for safety and efficacy, while making the products luxurious.

How does your price point compare to traditional items in the same sectors, and what sets you apart from other similar companies?

When compared to similar products, we are slightly less expensive.  We try our best to keep the products affordable.  We feel that our company and our products are in a league of their own, because no other company has such a variety and number of certified organic products.  In addition, most of the other organic companies contract to manufacture their products, rather than make them by hand in one location.  We continue to be a small, family-run business that cares about the environment and its customers. We believe good intentions can change the world.

How do consumers find out more about “safer ingredients” and vet the current products they are using?

The good news is that more and more people are becoming aware of all the harmful chemicals that are typically found in skin care and hair care products, and they are becoming quite educated on the subject.  A great place for consumers to start is EWG’s SKINDEEP cosmetic data base (cosmeticdatabase.com), where one can look up a product and find a hazard rating.  Of course, we always encourage consumers to take that information and use it as a guide to learn more.  It is not the end-all, be-all; however, it gives a good base line.  In addition, there are some GREAT blogs and groups on Facebook that are committed to helping to educate consumers so they can make safer choices for their families.

The easiest way to get rid of the harmful products that you may be using is one at a time.  I always tell people that it’s best to begin with the products that “stay” on the skin and get absorbed, such as lotions and sunscreens, toothpaste because it is ingested, and deodorant.  Antiperspirants are one of the most toxic products because it does not allow the body to detoxify, and in addition, stores the chemicals in the armpit area. We believe the body needs to sweat and detoxify itself to stay healthy!

What are you donating to the Gala?

We are donating our MAX DEO deodorant in a few scents to the GALA gift bags- Peppymint Tea, Sweet Lemongrass and Patchouli Citrus Clove.  It is one of our most important and effective products.
