Ascensia Diabetes Care Teams Up With HealthCorps To Bring Diabetes Awareness & Education To High School Students Across The Country
New York (September 4, 2018) – HealthCorps, a national non-profit organization founded by heart surgeon and Daytime Emmy award-winning host Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife Lisa, has announced its 2018 educational partnership effort with Ascensia Diabetes Care to bring diabetes awareness to high schools across the nation.
According to Dr. Oz, “Diabetes is a growing national crisis. Today, over 30 million people have diabetes and 84 million people are in danger of developing diabetes, yet a majority are unaware that they are at risk. Many of those at risk are high school students who, with better education, can avoid getting the disease altogether.” He added, “We are grateful to partners, like Ascensia Diabetes Care, for stepping up to help us educate America’s youth about this growing epidemic so we can begin to stem the tide among the younger generation.”
To-date, HealthCorps has impacted over 2.3 million high school students in 22 states across the country via its in-school Living Labs and HealthCorps University wellness programming and community events. In 2017 alone HealthCorps reached over 1 million high school students, an achievement that was enabled by a donation from Ascensia in 2017.
This is the second year in a row that Ascensia has partnered with HealthCorps to support education of young people about diabetes. The hope is that this additional support from Ascensia will help HealthCorps continue to impact a growing number of young people in 2018.
According to Dr. Oz, “We have found that educating students about wellness in the classroom not only changes their performance and quality of life, it directly influences their families and communities. We appreciate partners that truly understand the benefits education of young people can have in the community as a way of helping to prevent diseases like diabetes. They are enabling us to reach more students every day with a positive and proactive message about lasting lifestyle choices.” He added, “Our ultimate goal is to impact 20% of all high school students through our educational programming.”
Robert Schumm, Head of Region Americas, Ascensia Diabetes Care, stated, “We are honored to partner with such a nationally respected organization like HealthCorps and are committed to raising the awareness of diabetes with all generations. Bringing diabetes awareness and education to the youth of America is an important step in proactively dealing with this growing epidemic.”
Ascensia Diabetes Care will be working closely with HealthCorps to bring relevant diabetes education and awareness directly to students through its curriculum, in addition to supporting the many local HealthCorps community events and health fairs across the country.
HealthCorps is a national non-profit organization devoted to strengthening communities with the most innovative wellness approaches to make the next generation stronger – both mentally and physically.
HealthCorps gives teens tools to improve physical and mental health so they can learn to live more productive and happier lives. HealthCorps students exercise more, eat better, and practice positive thinking. The program impacted almost 1 million students across 21 schools in 2017.
The HealthCorps curriculum has been refined and developed in its in-school Living Labs program since 2003, where a full-time Coordinator is placed inside a high-need high school to mentor hundreds of students, teach health-related workshops, and promote a variety of during and after school activities. Coordinators are recent college graduates who go on to careers in medicine, public health policy, or wellness practices.
In 2015 HealthCorps teamed with CK-12 to distribute free, interactive and customizable versions of the HealthCorps curriculum for educators and students to use. For more information, please visit www.healthcorps.org
