Meagan Lewis joins HealthCorps as Program Specialist for HealthCorps University
NEW YORK, New York (August 10, 2017) — HealthCorps, a national health and wellness nonprofit, founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz, welcomes new staff member Meagan Lewis who will serve as Program Specialist for HealthCorps University.
As Program Specialist for HealthCorps University, Meagan Lewis will be based in Houston, Texas and will promote HealthCorps University to schools, districts and community based organizations. HealthCorps University (HCU), is a train-the-trainer professional development program that aims to empower educators and community partners by providing curriculum training and certification that equips participants to integrate sustainable wellness programming within their organizations’ current systems.
The 2015 Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) acknowledges the importance of mental health, wellness and physical education citing both health and physical education as part of a student’s “well-rounded” education. The implementation of ESSA at the federal level and compliance with the new law by state educational agencies (SEAs) and local education agencies (LEAs) provides an opportunity to more fully integrate health and wellness programs such as HealthCorps University into education policy and practice.
“Meagan’s background and knowledge of schools and school districts will serve HealthCorps and HCU well,” said the organization’s president Michelle Bouchard. “ESSA’s focus on a student’s well-rounded education and greater input by states and districts is a welcome change from the heavy-handed nature of No Child Left Behind. HCU is an ideal program for schools and districts dedicated to their student’s mental and physical health.”
Prior to HealthCorps, Meagan Lewis worked for FuelEd Schools, a start-up not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide vital social-emotional learning (SEL) skills to educators and district leaders in under-served populations, and the Louisiana Department of Education. She is a graduate of Louisiana State University with a degree in nutrition.
HealthCorps is a national non-profit organization that gives teens short and long-term lifesaving skills for physical and mental health so they and their families can live longer, more productive and happier lives. HealthCorps students exercise more, eat better and practice positive thought. The program will impact almost 1 million students across the United States in 2017.
The HealthCorps curriculum has been refined and developed in its in-school Living Labs program since 2003, where a full-time Coordinator is placed inside a high-need high school for two years to mentor hundreds of students, teach health related workshops, and promote a variety of during and after school activities. Coordinators are recent college graduates who go on to careers in medicine, public health policy or wellness practices.
