Mind Body Connection

IBS or irritable bowel syndrome is an uncomfortable condition that involves abdominal cramping and pain, changes in bowel habits and other digestive symptoms. Triggers for the condition are not clear, it is twice as common in women as men, and often begins in teen or young adulthood. New research suggests that hypnotherapy may be a viable treatment for some sufferers.

In a study of 346 IBS patients, 40% of patients who received hypnotherapy once a week, for 12 weeks, showed symptom improvement. The positive effect lasted for 1 to 7 years. The theory is that deep relaxation and hypnotic suggestion can help IBS patients to learn to control their symptoms.
