Keep Your Kids Safe At The Pool This Summer

Posted 08/07/2015 | By HealthCorps

Swimming is a great summer sport. Kids love splashing in the water and can get quite a workout without sweating on the hottest days. It’s important to make sure they drink adequate fluid, despite the cool water temperature that may limit their thirst. Water can also provide another risk….to their teeth.

Accidentally drinking small amounts of chlorinated water can cause dental abrasions, so swimming in the ocean’s salt water is actually safer for teeth. Also make sure that the beverage of choice for kids is plain water, instead of lemonade or sports drinks which can also be abrasive (and caloric).

To get the kids moving play games like tag, water polo, and water basketball or set up some competitive racing. Always make sure there are grownups designated as “pool monitors” to make sure that all children are accounted for at all times.
