Join Fresno County Officials and the California Walnut Board to Celebrate the Launch of HealthCorps® in Two Fresno High Schools

Students from Sunnyside and Edison go head-to-head in culinary competition

FRESNO, Calif. – Today guests from the Fresno Unified School District, Fresno County Farm Bureau, and  a representative of the 14th District’s office will join the California Walnut Board at Sunnyside High School to celebrate the launch of HealthCorps®. This proactive program that offers an innovative in-school curriculum focused on health, nutrition and mental resilience was founded and chaired by Dr. Mehmet Oz,two-time Daytime Emmy® Award-winning host of the two time Daytime Emmy® Award-winning “The Dr. Oz Show”, and his wife, Lisa Oz.

The California Walnut Board now supports HealthCorps in four schools in California, the newest being Sunnyside and Edison High Schools in Fresno, as well as two schools in Sacramento.  “Thanks to HealthCorps teaching the importance of good nutrition, youth are learning how whole food snacks, such as walnuts, are not only healthful, but taste great” said Dennis A. Balint, Executive Director of the California Walnut Board.

This partnership will positively impact approximately 6,500 students in Fresno and Sacramento, and numerous school staff, family and community members by providing for a HealthCorps “coordinator” in each of these schools. Along with HealthCorps bringing its important programming to underserved students in Fresno, it is also a significant agricultural region with as many as 300,000 walnut trees planted in the county.

Student teams from Sunnyside and Edison will compete in a healthy cook-off challenge led by culinary experts and their HealthCorps coordinators – recent college graduates who defer entry into medical school or graduate health programs to participate in public service through a two-year, full-time assignment at a designated public high school. Each team will prepare a healthy entrée to be evaluated by a panel of judges for taste, originality, use of healthy ingredients, and ease of preparation.

“Engaging students in healthy cooking and eating habits is an important first step toward creating healthy habits for a lifetime,” said Shawn G. Hayes, Ph.D., chief academic officer, director of research and education for HealthCorps. “When you make nutrition education fun, students are more likely to share it with their friends and families.”

About the California Walnut Board

The California walnut industry is made up of more than 4,000 growers and more than 80 handlers (processors). The Walnut Marketing Board was established in 1948 to represent the walnut growers and handlers of California. In April 2008, the Walnut Marketing Board became the California Walnut Board to provide origin designation to the product it represents.  The Board is funded by mandatory assessments of the handlers. The CWB is governed by a Federal Walnut Marketing Order. The Board promotes usage of walnuts in the United States through publicity and educational programs, and also provides funding for walnut production and post-harvest research.
