HEALTHCORPS Students AT LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL LEARN THAT ‘GIVING BACK’ STRENGTHENS MENTAL RESILIENCY
Students from High School of Coachella and Coachella Valley High School Prepare and Serve food for MLK Day of Service
On Saturday, January 24, HealthCorps students from High School of Coachella and Coachella Valley High School will join Martha’s Village & Kitchen from 10am-2pm to prepare and serve food for members of the community. Saturday represents one of many nationwide MLK Day of Service events coordinated by HealthCorps.
“Empowering teens to make a difference in their community is a key component of HealthCorps’ mission; mental resiliency. We all have something to give, and HealthCorps Coordinators recognize that learning how to do for others and ‘giving back’ to the world we live in creates confidence. It is incredible to see how the students feel about themselves after the MLK Day of Service,” commented HealthCorps President Michelle Bouchard. HealthCorps Coordinators work in tandem with students, school administration, and clubs to select a project that’s meaningful to both the school and community.
MLK Day of Service is a community-based project performed nationally by HealthCorps Coordinators. Coordinators work with students from high-need high schools to contribute time and energy to strengthen and improve lives of those living within their community. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'” HealthCorps began MLK Day of Service in conjunction with ServiceNation in 2009 to demonstrate the importance of giving back to our community. HealthCorps’ effort teaches how serving improves our mental strength through positive efforts. The initiative includes an opportunity to bring together people of different backgrounds and abilities, break down barriers, create stronger relationships within the community, and attract new volunteers to the HealthCorps mission.
HealthCorps® is a 501(c)(3) co-founded in 2003 by heart surgeon and Daytime Emmy Award-winning Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife Lisa. HealthCorps brings together many initiatives to address the “Whole Child” and activate the students’ mind, body, and spirit. HealthCorps Coordinators are embedded in high-need high schools and teach a unique in-school program based on nutrition, exercise, and mental resiliency. The HealthCorps curriculum is taught in 56 high schools nationwide. In the fall of 2012, HealthCorps introduced HealthCorps University, a train-the-trainer professional development program that makes the HealthCorps curriculum available to virtually any school or organization. The organization boasts 56 in-school programs and 50-educator training programs in 17 states and Washington, D.C. You can follow HealthCorps on Twitter and on Facebook.
