Healthcorps’ living labs coordinator Returns to her Hometown and starts the School Year at Byng High School

ADA, OK (August 18, 2016)

HealthCorps, a national not for profit founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz and Lisa Oz, is pleased to announce the addition of Living Labs coordinator, Hana Stenson, of Ada Oklahoma. Hana grew up in Ada and attended Ada high school. Hana graduated from American University in Washington, D.C. earning a Bachelors of Science of Public Health.

With a strong passion for public health, Hana wants to influence communities that inspire healthy living. As a child, she had personal experience with obesity and is in a unique position to share her passion for leading healthy lifestyles and reducing obesity in the next generation. “I believe HealthCorps’ model of using young adults to mentor youth is ideal to make change.” Say Hana. “I also like that HealthCorps incorporates mental resilience into the curriculum. This is such an important part of behavior change that is often over looked. I am looking forward to this year.”

Always looking to strive for higher goals, Hana would like to continue with her education to obtain her masters in public health with a focus on community health education. Her career goal is to become a program manager for public health projects.

As a Coordinator, Hana will commit to HealthCorps for two years and facilitate the HealthCorps’ skills based curriculum (fitness, nutrition, mental strength, and personal health) in high school classrooms throughout the school year while developing a strong relationship with school personnel and officials to deliver the HealthCorps components; convene and/or engage with the school wellness council.

She must also extend HealthCorps’ message beyond the classroom by organizing health-promoting events and activates at their school site (i.e. health fairs; parent and teacher outreach events, lunch time demonstrations, and running after school cooking club, etc.) and serve as a mentor and role model to the students.

HealthCorps’ Living Labs program at Byng high school is funded by the Chickasaw Nation.

About Healthcorps

HealthCorps is a national non-profit organization that gives teens tools to improve physical and mental health so they can learn to live more productive and happier lives. HealthCorps students exercise more, eat better and practice positive thought. The program will impact almost 1 million students across 19 states in 2016.  The HealthCorps curriculum has been refined and developed in its in-school Living Labs program since 2003, where a full-time Coordinator is placed inside a high-need high school to mentor hundreds of students, teach health related workshops, and promote a variety of during and after school activities. Coordinators are recent college graduates who go on to careers in medicine, public health policy or wellness practices.  HealthCorps University is an intense professional development program that certifies participants to bring HealthCorps’ innovative health and wellness curriculum to their organization whether it’s a school system, community organization or corporation. In 2015, HealthCorps teamed with CK-12 to distribute free, interactive and customizable versions of the HealthCorps curriculum for educators and students to use.   For more information please visit Healthcorps.org
