HealthCorps® and The Hawn Foundation Announce Partnership, Bringing First Class Mental Resiliency, Nutrition and Fitness Education to America’s Youth

Collaboration Unveiled at HealthCorps’ 8th Annual Gala Honoring The Hawn Foundation’s Founder Goldie Hawn, Hosted by HealthCorps Co-Founders Dr. Oz and Lisa Oz

New York – April 10, 2014 – Two leaders in the health and wellness for America’s youth, HealthCorps® and The Hawn Foundation’s MindUP™ program, have entered a partnership to further their reach and influence for a healthier generation, it was announced at HealthCorps 8th Annual Gala on April 9. The collaboration integrates the organizations’ programs, giving teens across America access to greater health and wellness education, improving their mental, physical and emotional health overall.

This announcement comes on the heels of HealthCorps’ honor of Goldie Hawn, Academy Award-winning actress, best-selling author and founder of The Hawn Foundation. She is the visionary behind MindUP™, which equips children, educators and parents with vital social and emotional literacy skills. HealthCorps was co-founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz, renowned heart surgeon and Daytime Emmy Award-winning host of the Daytime Emmy Award-winning “The Dr. Oz Show,” and his wife Lisa Oz to engage youth as the catalysts for simple lifestyle changes that will enhance their health and the health of their families.

“Partnering with Goldie’s MindUP™ program is a watershed moment for HealthCorps in our quest to inspire America’s youth to embrace a healthier future,” said Dr. Oz, co-founder. “We hope others will join us to bring the best-of-the-best in mental, nutritional and physical fitness curricula to students across the country and empower them to change their lives and the lives of those around them.”

“The key ingredients for a happy and healthy life are found in the balance of both mental and physical wellbeing,” said Ms. Hawn. “And that is exactly what this collaboration with Dr. Oz’s HealthCorps organization hopes to provide teenagers. When children learn about their brain, such as the physical impact of deep breathing on stress and the positive effects of mindful awareness training, positive psychology, nutrition and exercise – they are better able to self-regulate effectively and thrive.”

Beginning this fall, the integration will bring MindUP™, a program based in neuroscience, mindful awareness training, positive psychology and social and emotional literacy, to HealthCorps, enhancing its existing mental resiliency component alongside its fitness and nutrition curriculum. In turn, HealthCorps’ physical fitness and nutrition curriculum will bolster MindUP™’s program, furthering the connection between mental health and physical wellbeing working together for teens to reach their full potential.

In addition to Ms. Hawn, Gloria Steinem and The California Endowment were also honored for their contributions to the health and well-being of American youth at the HealthCorps’ Gala, which raised funds to continue its fight against child obesity and expand its groundbreaking in-school health education programming. HealthCorps supporters Ben Vereen, Jermaine Paul, Rocco DiSpirito, Candice Kumai, George Duran, among others, attended the event, which was capped by a performance by the iconic 90s group C+C Music Factory.

About The Hawn Foundation

The Hawn Foundation was developed by Academy Award® winning actress and visionary children’s advocate Goldie Hawn, to improve the overall well-being of children, youth and adults by equipping them with vital social and emotional literacy skills needed to navigate 21st century challenges so they may lead smart, healthy, happier lives with greater engagement in learning and life. Assembling a team of educators, neuroscientists, positive psychologists and experts in mindful awareness training—Hawn created MindUP™, an evidence-based, CASEL accredited curriculum and professional development training program that increases student and classroom engagement while aligning with Common Core and fostering greater outcomes for whole child development . The end result reduces stress, strengthens abilities for concentration, encourages emotional regulation, improves executive function, creates pro-social behavior and nurtures optimism, empathy and happiness while building resiliency. Rooted in neuroscience, the program teaches self-regulatory behavioral control while offering tools and strategies for resilience. For 10 years, it has grown as the signature initiative of The Hawn Foundation and currently serves children, counselors, educators and parents across five continents. HealthCorps® “Coordinators” carry out unique in-school and community programming targeting high-need populations. Using peer-mentoring to deliver a progressive curriculum in nutrition, fitness and mental strength, HealthCorps® Coordinators give teens purpose, help develop human character, and inspire an interest in health and culinary arts careers. HealthCorps® also serves as a unique research laboratory – exploring the complex, underlying causes of the obesity crisis and discovering and communicating solutions. As a result, HealthCorps® is transforming the educational paradigm one school at a time. The program network spans 62 schools in 13 states and the District of Columbia.

In the fall of 2012, HealthCorps introduced HealthCorps University, a new “train the trainer” professional development program that makes the HealthCorps principles and curriculum available to virtually any school.
