New York, NY- June 8, 2011 – Dr. Mehmet Oz, Co-Founder and Chairman of HealthCorps® (www.healthcorps.org) and award-winning host of a nationally syndicated talk show, paid a special visit to Cliffside Park High School on Monday, June 6, to speak with students about a range of teen health topics.

Students raised questions about such issues as adequate sleep, hair loss, how to gain weight and how to eat smarter as Dr. Oz and his teenage daughter, Zoe Oz, responded to the teens’ inquiries and encouraged a lively dialogue on students’ most pressing health and lifestyle concerns.

Dr. Oz’s visit was taped by producers from ABC News’ Good Morning America program as it coincided with the launch of the best-selling author’s newest book, “YOU: The Owner’s Manual for Teens: A Guide to a Healthy Body and Happy Life,” co-written with writing partner Dr. Michael Roizen, teen health expert Dr. Ellen Rome and Zoe Oz. Forty Cliffside Park students received advance copies of the publication, which Dr. Oz personalized.

Cliffside Park students also learned about a new online resource for teens, teenDailyStrength (http://teen.sharecare.com),a moderated teen community for 13-to-19 year olds that can be accessed via healthcorps.org. The new site, which is moderated by a 24-hour team of administrators, bloggers and nurse Volunteer Community Leaders, offers a much-needed, safe outlet for teens to find solutions to their health and lifestyle challenges.

HealthCorps, a proactive wellness movement, was founded by Cliffside Park residents Dr. Oz and his wife Lisa Oz to fight child obesity by empowering students and their families to become health agents of change in their communities and to serve as a vehicle for intervention and research.

Through HealthCorps’ in-school program, the non-profit places recent college graduates in a designated public high school as a full time health mentor for a two-year period. Coordinators carry out a curriculum on fitness, nutrition and mental strength, which includes guest speakers and the Teen Battle Chef nutritional cooking program, and students benefit immensely from the peer mentoring model.

Cliffside Park High School is one of three New Jersey schools affiliated with HealthCorps whose network spans a total of 41 schools in 11 states. The New Jersey State Department of Health and Senior Services supports the program in the Garden State.
