HealthCorps celebrates 149 million steps taken during National Walktober Step Challenge
NEW YORK, NY – November 22, 2019– HealthCorps® (www.healthcorps.org), a national non-profit with innovative approaches to help teens grow mentally strong and physically fit, is proud to announce staff from 35 different schools across the country walked over 149 million steps (almost 75,000 miles) in the HealthCorps National “Walktober” Step Challenge.
688 participated in the national challenge designed for school staff members working in HealthCorps Living Labs around the country to compete against each other in a school vs. school competition.
Across the nation, HealthCorps currently maintains a network of 55 schools called Living Labs. Through the program, a full-time Coordinator – a recent college graduate with a passion for health and wellness, is embedded in a high-need high school to mentor hundreds of students, teach health-related workshops, and promote a variety of during and after school activities.
“We’re proud of everyone that joined us for Walktober 2019—our Community of Steppers—for prioritizing their health, trying new tactics to incorporate physical activity into their routines, encouraging others, starting walking groups on their campuses, and for continuing to be champions for healthy communities. We will continue to engage schools in finding solutions that improve health-promoting practices, and look forward to an even stronger Walktober 2020,” said HealthCorps Program Supervisor and Bloomberg MPH Fellow Natalie Tunzi.
