Headlines to Wake You Up and to Get You Eating Better
Americans eating habits are worse since 2008 and experts say “systemic change” is needed. According to a recent Gallup/Healthways poll and report, fewer adults are eating healthfully daily, based on their food diary recall. Experts who reviewed the report noted the conviction of the pollsters and researchers, who believe that help needs to come in the form of systemic environmental change.
One such change would be the removal of certain food ingredients, like trans fats and high fructose corn syrup, from the food manufacturing chain. unlike some popular diet food trends, the solution is not to eat “better versions” of foods like chips (baked instead of fried), or to choose agave, a natural sweetener, instead of HFCS (high fructose corn syrup), but rather to completely drop unhealthy foods from our regular daily eating, choosing instead better-for-you food options like Greek yogurt, fruits, vegetables, air popped popcorn, or small handfuls of nuts. Experts also strongly suggest that the food industry needs to get on board with changes that support healthier food offerings – without a government mandate.
