H2H Event Beams Ray of Light On Overcast Day At South Street Seaport, NYC

Yes it was raining and a bit cool for a mid-May day in New York City, but the Highway to Health Festival at South Street Seaport /Pier 17 went on as scheduled this past Sunday.

There were close to 4000 attendees and over 1,000 actual participants.  Coordinators and student volunteers from HealthCorps’ schools included:

  • South Shore HS (Academy for Conservation & Environment), Brooklyn – Courtland Kouassiaman
  • The Kurt Hahn Expeditionary Learning School, Brooklyn – Danielle Henderson
  • Edward A. Reynolds Westside HS, Manhattan – Arielle Feldshon
  • High School for Law and Public Service, Manhattan – Carlos Nugent
  • Humanities/Baldwin Prep, Manhattan – Aaron Kaplan
  • Lower Eastside Prep, Manhattan – Frances Warren
  • Monroe Academy, Bronx – Jermyn Addy
  • Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy, Bronx – Austin Cromartie
  • University Heights HS, Bronx – Caroline Herion
  • Wings Academy, Bronx – Leah Katsos
  • Aviation HS, Queens – Cynthia Mafla

The health festival included: Sahaja Meditation, Family Cook Productions, fitness demonstrations featuring Zumba and Self Defense, Teen Battle Chef, New York Organ Donor Network, Beth Israel Medical Center, New York University College of Dentistry, Yoga with Dinesh Kumar, HealthPlus, NYSC , American Diabetes Association, Heart Healthy Wealthy and Wise, and Hamilton-Madison House.  There was also a surprise visit from a group of New York City firefighters!!

Attendees who braved the rain, wind and cold got a chance to visit student exhibits including:

  • Gardening Explorations Booths
  • Exercise Everywhere Fitness Demos
  • Hydration Stations
  • Nutritional Cooking Demos
  • Face Painting / Button Making
  • Yoga Demos
  • Healthy Relationships Exhibit
  • Eating is Believing Nutrition Booth

Chef and Food Network star, George Duran, hosted the Teen Battle Chef Competition on the main stage, and judges included chef , author and Food Network Iron Chef America Judge Candice Kumai, HealthCorps COO  Juan Brea, and Salveira Gonzalez, a student at Riverdale/Kings Academy in the Bronx.

The winners, who received awards provided by bodyADDICTS,  included:

For Overall Taste – Aviation HS, Queens
For Showmanship – Wings Academy, Bronx
For Skills & Plating – George Washington Ed. Campus, Manhattan
For Information, Nutrition, Ingredients – Kurt Hahn, Brooklyn

Entertainment on the main stage during the Festival included the ICONic Boyz Dance Crew and TKA.  Despite the inclement weather, the show went on, as in the Music for a Better America Teen Talent Competition, and the crowd was treated to a variety of class acts.  Judges for the talent competition included members of TKA, Geo Hubela (ICONic) and Tiffany Lewis, Lincoln HS coach for Soul Sapphires Dance Team.  Health Plus Amerigroup provided awards to the winners:

1st prize – Nathalie Polanco, Monroe Academy
2nd prize– Octavia Davis, Academy for Conservation & Environment
3rd prize– Denzel Saunders, Academy for Conservation & Environment
Audience Choice – Priscilla Hernandez, Academy for Conservation & Environment

NYSC sponsored a UFX Fitness Competition and attendees of all ages, including HealthCorps’ students, as well as members from our own executive team, gave it their best try!!  Winners of the competition and their prizes:

Student Winners:
Female:  Jazlee Diaz (from Lincoln HS) – 248 Reps – Received $50 Itunes Gift Card from NYSC
Male:  Ruben Ortiz (from Lincoln HS) – 373 Reps – Received $50 I Tunes Gift Card from NYSC

Adult Female:
1st place:  Paula Fastuca – 351 Reps – Received $50 I tunes gift card from NYSC, 30 day NYSC Membership and free entry into Civilian Military Combine Mud Run
2nd Place:  Catherine Bush – 335 Reps – Received $50 I Tunes gift card from NYSC

Adult Male:
1st Place:  Francis Warner (3rd year he has competed at the Higwhay to Health) – 345 Reps – received $50 I tunes gift card from NYSC, 30 day NYSC Membership and free entry into Civilian Military Combine Mud Run
2nd Place:  Luis Lutz-Domnich – 313 Reps

There were free healthy and yummy treats, thanks to National Sponsor Evamor Water, Beanitos, Honest Tea, Sneaky Pete’s Oat Beverage, GimMe Health Seaweed Snacks and KIND Bar.  A shout out to the sixty plus student volunteers, Rob Lunde, Helena Judd and the amazing coordinators, who all made the day a huge success despite the weather challenges!!
