Give your grains a color boost

Whole grains like millet and quinoa and even rice are hitting market shelves in growing numbers. You may also see some of these products with “color descriptions” like black and purple rice, and even red or rainbow quinoa.

Most of these grains prepare easily with boiling water. Just remember to follow the directions with regards to rinsing first if necessary, and then be precise when it comes to the ratio of water to grain in the cooking process. Other exciting and tasty grains to try include:

  • Amaranth
  • Buckwheat
  • Barley
  • Bulgur wheat
  • Farro
  • Kamut
  • Pearled barley
  • Rye
  • Spelt
  • Teff
  • Steel cut oats
