GET HEALTHY FOR NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH

March is National Nutrition Month ®! Let’s get everyone involved and celebrate together. Each year the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics puts together a nutrition and information campaign that focuses on the importance of making informed food choices. The campaign teaches participates to make sound decisions with campaigns such as Put Your Best Fork Forward in 2017, Savor the Flavor in 2016, Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day in 2013 and my personal favorite, Eat Right with Color in 2011, and in 2018 the campaign is Go Further with Food.

This year’s campaign hits the mark on so many levels. The CDC reported that 75% of Americans are failing to eat healthy. Americans are not eating the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables and are overeating refined sugars and grains. And here’s another sad statistic to add to the pile, only 3% of Americans meet the basic qualifications for a “healthy lifestyle”.These reports shed light on why 36% of American adults are suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. Go Further with Food will encourage address what isn’t working and create eating habits that are ideal for your lifestyle.

We’re all kids on the inside.

Games are a great way to help children have fun while learning about nutrition and wellness. This National Nutrition Month® play nutrition games with your kids, or summon the inner child in yourself, to celebrate long term health.

Game #1 . The Alphabet Menu

Write each letter on a piece of paper and put them into a bag. Each day pull a letter and honor that letter by preparing a meal with that letter as an ingredient. M — mushrooms, melons, mangos, mint, macadamia nuts … This is a great game that helps Eat with Color and variety.

Game #2. Themed Tastings

For the most part we know what we like and what we don’t like but I’m sure there are so many tastes and flavors you’ve never tried. Once a month host a themed tasting for yourself. For example, perhaps you like tuna but you’ve never tried salmon, white fish or yellow tail. Why not make a game of sampling a variety! Who knows, maybe you’ll find a new favorite fish.

Game #3. Food Festivals

Houston is notorious for its food scene and multiple times a month you can find a food rave or festival without trying. Among the most popular are the Greek festival, The Texas Renaissance Festival and the International Festival. Food festivals spotlight and celebrate foreign foods from all the world and are an excellent way to experience a wide variety of foods you normally not attempt at home.
