The first Boston Marathon in 1897 had 18 participants. It now attracts 30,000 registered participants.

As of spring 2014, 65 million people had gone running or jogging in the last 12 months.

In 1882, Charles Rowell ran the longest ultra-marathon distance of 300 miles indoors in 58 hours, 17 minutes, and 6 seconds. He holds the ultra-long distance record.

California has the most running clubs (203) out of all the states in the U.S. North Dakota has the fewest (6).

Up to 70% of recreational and competitive runners will sustain at least one injury in a 12 month period.

Quick running tip: When you buy new running shoes, put the date somewhere on the shoe and replace in 6 months. After half a year, most shoes begin to break down.
