From the Corps: Frances Adams – Fitness Fiesta Health Fair
Fitness Fiesta Health Fair
After being rewarded the Health Champion Award for Schools by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, HealthCorps club members and student volunteers built off last year’s work to make a bigger and better health fair this year.
This year’s health fair was themed Fitness Fiesta: Celebramos Salud! It featured 20 student driven booths and 25 community organizations offering information and engaging with participants about a wide array of health topics including mental health, drug addiction, fitness, and nutrition.
We highlighted our Farm to School program and brought in local farms to give out produce samples that are now being offered in our cafeteria as part of the Farm to School program. Students were able to immediately put what they were learning into practice by having nutritious samples, cookbook prizes, and physical activity including biking and Zumba.
Students, staff and administration are excited to find a way to continue this program component next year as HealthCorps transitions out of the school.
HealthCorps Club President, Rosemary Juarez, had this to say about the day:
“It was incredible to see all of our hard work come together. When we were walking around to check on booths, I got to learn a lot from other students and community groups about health! It was hard work but it was so much fun!”
Health teacher and site supervisor, Dusty Lovejoy, was also proud of the HealthCorps event:
“This year’s health fair was bigger and better than last year’s. I thought we did it big last year, but seeing more community organizations and more student booths this year made me so proud! This event is a great opportunity for students and staff, too! I was able to talk to many community organizations and, hopefully, I’ll have a few of them come talk to my classes as guest speakers.”
