MLK Day Of Service

Mechel Dickerson
Byng High School, Ada, Ok

When presented with the opportunity to volunteer Byng High School HealthCorps club had an endless list of ideas! We narrowed it down to making and delivering Valentine theme cards to senior care centers in Ada, Ok. Two facilities were picked and we set out to deliver and visit with the elderly for a few hours! Students woke up early on a day they did not have school and carpooled with each other to meet at all the different care centers! Eight club members spread throughout the halls, hands full of cards and smiles on their faces to knock on doors and visit with the residents! After we visited and delivered all of the cards we went to grab a quick breakfast as a group and talk about how doing this service project made them feel. Here is what a few of them had to say:

” When I saw the elderly’s face light up, I felt real joy.”  Willow V, 10th grade female.

“Community service is very important to me and I’m happy to do this with HealthCorps!” – Delanie Seals 10th grade female.

“I loved that we made a difference in the someone’s day.” -Brianna 11th grade, female.

“I really enjoyed getting to visit with the nursing residents and bring a smile to their faces! Shelby S. 11th grade female.

Overall MLK Day of Service at Byng High was a huge success and we all had a great time serving the elderly and seeing how kindness can make someone else’s day!
