Spike-ball for All!!

When I first arrived to Byng High School I wanted to learn as much as I could about the campus! I hit the ground running asking teachers, staff, students, and anyone else I could about the typical school day, what it looked like and what they want it to look like in the future that I could help with! One of the most popular request from students was to have more opportunities for physical activity during the day. There are no physical education classes offered in the high school, so for students that are not involved in athletics, finding time in the school day for PE is limited.

I fell in love with the game of Spikeball during college and had a few sets, so I decided to start going outside during lunch and setting up the game to see if students would want to play!  Some students had never seen the game so it was fun to watch them learn the rules and get their peers involved!  Students eventually started asking if we could play Spike Ball every day.  So, now, we play Spikeball every day (Oklahoma weather permitting), play music and get moving until lunch is over!

The assistant principal here at Byng, Mr. Lee had this to say:

“Spikeball has been an exciting activity for the students at lunch.  The students have really enjoyed getting to play Spikeball, some of the students look forward to it and are disappointed when lunch is over.  It has been a great way to get our students active.”

I have so much fun getting to challenge different students to a game and see them get excited about who had the best records throughout the week!  Soon we may do a spikeball tournament, I am excited to see how many teams we can get involved!  Spikeball  has been a simple way to increase physical activity for students during the day while at school!
