February 2018: Letter from The President
Last week, all our Coordinators from around the country gathered for mid-year professional development training in Chickasaw Country. When I visited them during training, I continued to be amazed by our young men and women working daily in the field with hundreds of teens facing so many challenges – poor dietary habits, lack of sleep, physical and mental stress, drug abuse, bullying – and the list just goes on. It’s an emotional and uphill journey they encounter each day – but our Coordinators are as Resilient as the teens they work with in the classroom, in their after school clubs or during the school day. HealthCorps Coordinators are fully invested and committed to supporting the physical and mental well-being of the all of their students, and especially those that are dealing with some of the toughest issues our youth population has ever faced. These stories affirm for me the immediacy and critical need to expand our reach, by training more Coordinators and rolling out more HealthCorps University training seminars, so that we can deliver our health-enhancing curriculum to more schools and help to ensure the health, well-being, and future success of thousands more children and youth across the country.
The entire HealthCorps team is working hard to support the organization’s growth, as we embrace new opportunities. We are enthusiastic about continued research showing positive changes in student behavioral health in the Living Labs. We are equally excited to be partnering with irecover.me, a non-profit focused on making addiction education relevant and accessible to young people. Opioid addiction is a public health crisis, and our HealthCorps schools and students are not immune to this problem. This partnership with irecover.me will empower our Coordinators to share enhanced life skills and lessons in mental resilience, addiction awareness, fitness and nutrition to positively change and potentially save more young lives.
I invite you to view our enhanced digital curriculum, videos and resources online on CK-12.org – our digital partner who we’ve been working with to bring our free curriculum to more school districts across the U.S. Or maybe you may want to join us at one of our upcoming public HealthCorps University (HCU) trainings in Houston or Los Angeles https://www.hcuniversity.org . If you are a parent, wellness instructor, teacher or know anyone who is interested in expanding their personal or professional health journey, please visit our website to learn more about our HCU seminar program.
Thank you for always being in our corner. I hope you are all as excited as I am for what the future holds for our kids.
President, HealthCorps Inc.
