ESSA Funding Update

Posted 06/16/2016 | By HealthCorps

Help secure federal funding for health and physical education programs in our nation’s school!

For nearly a decade, HealthCorps has been an active member of a coalition fighting to elevate health and physical education in federal education law. With the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in December 2015 that goal moved one step closer to reality when both subjects were included as part of a “well rounded education.” ESSA also created a large block grant to states, Title IV part A, which would allow states and districts to create and execute meaningful programs for their students – including health and physical education.

Unfortunately, the Administration and members of the U.S. Senate Appropriations subcommittee responsible for education funding have both undervalued this block grant by requesting a fraction of the amount authorized by a bipartisan Congress. Please call or email your United States Senator and member of the U.S. House of Representative and ask them to fund Title IV Part A of ESSA at the authorized amount of $1.65B so your kids can have a meaningful, healthy and well rounded education.

You can read HealthCorps president Michelle Bouchard’s statement on the funding here.
