Question #1: What led you to HealthCorps?
I was able to see another coordinator in action prior to starting with the company, and I knew that it was something I could picture myself doing. Prior to my coordinator position with HealthCorps, I only had clinical health experience. This position was perfect for me, as it allowed me to work and view health from a public health perspective. The idea of working in a high school and encouraging students to live healthy lives was very appealing. I am fortunate to have a job that allows me to impact the lives of those around me.
Question #2: What has been the best part about your placement so far?
The best part of my placement is the supportive staff and amazing students. I am fortunate to work for a school district that will always find a way to ensure that the needs of our students are met. Given that Upland High School has more than 3200 students, I get the opportunity to work with diverse individuals with so many skills and talents. Everyday, I meet new students and staff.
Question #3: What are some activities that you are involved with outside of the classroom?
Working out at the gym has become a lifestyle for me the last couple of years. It has become a great outlet to relieve stress and I enjoy seeing my body change for the better. Other hobbies include golfing on the weekends and woodworking. When I am not doing those activities, I am probably hanging out with my fiancé and friends.
Question #4: What do you plan to pursue after your service to HealthCorps is complete?
After my service to HealthCorps, I will be attending medical school. Becoming a physician has been a longtime goal of mine, and I am excited to get the show on the road. I will take much of the personal lessons that I learned working for HealthCorps with me as I pursue my professional degree. I know HealthCorps has prepared me to be a culturally competent physician with an appreciation for public health.
Question #5: What is one thing you have learned from your placement that you will be able to carry with you as you move forward in life?
I have learned so much with HealthCorps that I can carry with me for the rest of my life. One big thing that I have learned is to get out of my comfort zone. This job requires coordinators to be great communicators, effectively teach students, and to provide events that are fun and engaging. I have grown in all of these aspects, and I owe that to HealthCorps. These skills will be carried we me as I pursue my medical degree.
