Last week, the US House of Representatives passed their education bill H.R. 5, formally known as the Student Success Act, with a very close vote of 218-213. Twenty-seven Republicans crossed their party-line to join the entire Democratic caucus in voting against the bill.

While the bill eliminates the PEP program and does NOT recognize Physical Education or Health Education as core subjects its passage is an important step towards reauthorizing the federal education law known as No Child Left Behind.

Last week and this week, the US Senate will debate their education bill, S.1177, the Every Child Achieves Act. This bill not only includes Physical Education as a core subject and the PEP program – as an authorized program, but last week, Senators Murray and Alexander agreed to add Health as core subject.

In addition to asking your US Senator to support S.1177, we ask that they also support the Kirk/Baldwin/Reed/Brown amendment #2161, the Resource Equity Amendment which we believe would help ensure transparency and equity in funding for health and physical programs in high need schools and school districts.

A vote on this amendment is expected this afternoon. Please contact your Senator now!
