Can you “catch” a cavity from someone?

A recent video surfaced of actress Alicia Silverstone chewing food and then feeding it to her baby. Regardless of one’s opinion of the practice, health experts pointed out that this practice could raise the risk of her baby getting exposed to oral bacteria from mom’s mouth and therefore having an increased risk of developing dental caries or cavities. This can also happen when a mom simply tastes a spoonful of food for temperature assessment before feeding the next bite to her child. Even couples can “share” oral bacteria through tasting each other’s foods.

Regular dental visits, brushing and flossing regularly and chewing sugar-free gum to promote saliva can all help to lower oral bacterial growth.
