Can vitamin C help my elevated blood pressure?
A healthy blood pressure is now considered to be a systolic or “number above the line” below 120, and a diastolic or “below the line” number lower than 80. Many Americans have hypertension or elevated blood pressure, and the concern is that most may not know their blood pressure is high because symptoms are often silent. That’s why it has been named the “silent epidemic.” Measures to control blood pressure include eating a healthy well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and lower in sodium.
A recent study suggests that taking a vitamin C supplement may also help. In the study, participants with high blood pressure took 500 mgs. vitamin C daily for 8 weeks, and noted a reduction in the systolic (top) number. Always talk with your doctor before starting supplements, especially if you have any health conditions and/or are taking other medications.
