Café o Yea Puts Nutrition Front and Center at Herbert Hoover High School

Posted 04/09/2015 | By HealthCorps

Shonique White, a coordinator at Herbert Hoover High School in San Diego, CA, got HealthCorps Student Ambassadors to pit “common snacks” against healthier alternatives, in a nutrition face-off. The snack challenge evolved after a lesson and discussion about foods and health, with the students wanting to tackle the topic of obesity, by focusing on a specific topic that would shed some light on nutrition differences in the snack category.

They decided to pit:

  1. Hot Cheetos against a Healthy Spicy Trail Mix (one of Shonique’s many healthy recipes)
  2. Skittles versus dried fruit
  3. Arizona Iced Tea (fully sweetened) versus strawberry lemon and mango strawberry infused waters

The students learned all about levels of added sugar, unhealthy fats, calories and portion sizes and how to choose or make healthier snacks and beverages.
