Bugs in the Office

Posted 01/28/2015 | By HealthCorps

The mission: Avoid catching a cold, virus, or bacterial infection this winter

The danger: It takes between 2 and 4 hours for germs to spread and contaminate nearly 60% of workplace surfaces.  According to a University of Arizona study, it’s your hands more than a sneeze spreading those bugs.

Which areas are the worst? The break room, especially the coffeepot handle, microwave door handle and buttons, and refrigerator handle.

The solution: Wash your hands with soap and water, about 4 times a day and turn to hand sanitizers as the next best choice.  Wash hands before and after food preparation and eating.

Quick tip: How many 5 minute walks does it take to undo the health hazards of three straight hours of sitting?  An Indiana University study says “3”!
