What did you do after HealthCorps? What are you doing now because of HealthCorps? What do you plan to do in the future?
I graduated from my Master in Public Health program at Columbia in May 2015, with a focus on health promotion. Since then I have been working for a child-focused NGO in Laos. HealthCorps opened my eyes to the extent to which social disparities affect health. In the future, I hope to design culturally appropriate health interventions for underserved populations to empower individuals to make healthy changes in their life.
What was the greatest lesson you learned about creating change in health and wellness in your time with HealthCorps?
The greatest lesson I learned about creating change in health and wellness is that change must fit with the existing goals and priorities within a community. In order for a change in health and wellness to be sustainable, it must address needs and desires other than strictly health outcomes.
What was your favorite moment or memory with a student, staff, or community member during your time as a HealthCorps Coordinator?
My favorite memory from being a HealthCorps coordinator was when a staff member told me with tears in her eyes that she had lost 25 pounds and counting thanks to the HealthCorps wellness challenges over the two years I had worked there.
