About HealthCorps

HealthCorps is a 501 (c)(3) that gives teens tools to improve physical and mental health so they can learn to live more productive and happier lives. HealthCorps students exercise more, eat better and practice positive thought.

Founded in 2003 by Dr. Mehmet Oz, HealthCorps’ mission is to unleash the power of America’s youth so they can live productive lives. Its vision is to impact 20% of all high school students nationwide in order to reduce the footprint of obesity on the next generation. Each day, HealthCorps shapes the lives of the current generation of students.

The Situation

A 2014 American Psychological Association’s survey found that high school students say they have stress levels that top those of adults. Now, more than ever, young Americans need grit as well as physical and mental strength in an ever-challenging world.

HealthCorps shows young people that the everyday choices they make about what they put in their mouths, how much they move and how positively they think and persevere, impacts how independent a life they will live. HealthCorps doesn’t bombard teenagers with facts about nutrition and exercise. Through the inspiring delivery of young mentors, HealthCorps teaches teens that they are accountable for their future through their simple thoughts and actions and that they can set the course of their future now.

HealthCorps Living Labs

Across the nation, HealthCorps maintains a network of schools we call Living Labs. Here, a full-time Coordinator is placed inside a high-need high school to mentor hundreds of students, teach health related workshops, and promote a variety of during and after school activities.

Program Relevance

Unhealthy social marketing targeted to youth, increased access to unhealthy foods and behaviors, proven links between health and student achievement, and budget cuts in school health and physical education programs demonstrate the importance of HealthCorps’ work in the community. Reflective of the demographics, HealthCorps targets its resources to communities of greatest need.

HealthCorps focuses on adolescents and teens as many efforts are already targeted to the early childhood and elementary populations. HealthCorps believes that educating America’s youth in wellness at school not only changes their performance and quality of life, it directly influences their families and communities.

This collection of individuals, corporations and non-profits assist us in everything from developing our curriculum to bringing HealthCorps into new schools.

We would not be where we are today without their help, and for that we are grateful.
