A bit intimidated to buy whole grains and cook them?

Though most nutritionists feel the learning curve to cook grains is pretty simple, sometimes you just want an easy-to-prepare seasoned grain side dish. Village Harvest offers a wheatberry, barley and quinoa blend with cranberries and almonds, and a brown and wild rice blend with corn and black beans. Also available:

  • Golden quinoa
  • Red quinoa and brown rice
  • Farre & Red Rice
  • Brown, red and wild rice

In terms of daily fiber needs, experts would like to see:

  • Women under age 51 target 25 grams of fiber daily
  • Men under age 51 target 38 grams of fiber daily

A good rule of thumb is to get 14 grams of fiber for every 1000 calories you eat daily, but if you are restricting calories for weight loss, make sure to use the basic guidelines by age group and gender. Remember that fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, grains and beans/legumes all offer fiber.
