Why is pregnancy not a time for sweets and treats?

Many pregnant women assume that since they’re going to gain weight during pregnancy anyway, they might as well have “a lot of fun” and really enjoy sweets and treats on a regular basis. A new study confirms the reality that the dietary choices pregnant women make during pregnancy can negatively impact the health of their baby.

The study revealed that expectant mothers who consumed more sweets and sugar-sweetened beverages specifically during the first trimester of pregnancy, are more likely to have obese babies when compared to women who were more careful with dietary choices. The researchers concluded that there seems to be some impact from exposure of babies in utero to (mom’s) sweets and subsequent weight outcomes in these children.

Certainly pregnant moms need healthy nutritious foods to maintain energy levels and a healthy weight. Exercise is also an important component of a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy. Remember your habits affect you and your baby!
