Make Halloween magic without all the candy

Halloween has become the premier candy holiday. In fact, if a child doesn’t come home lugging a huge stash of candy, even after having eaten some along the journey, the experience is not considered a success. Here’s an opportunity for parents to shift the focus of the holiday, especially considering the rising tide of childhood obesity:

Why not consider a trade – give your child a toy and one or two small candies in exchange for all the candy Have a party and let the kids have fun with crafts instead of collecting candy Agree ahead of time with your child on a schedule for dispensing the candy collected, over a reasonable and extended period of time Discuss making small individual bags out of the candy stash, keeping some and donating the rest to a food pantry. Consider hosting a healthy-baking party and let the kids create healthy muffins that they can personalize with berries, nuts and other healthy toppings.
