Fordham High School
Shortly after arriving at Fordham High School, Coordinator Erica McClanahan met Elanny, a 14 year-old student who weighed 200 pounds. Elanny wanted to lose weight and become healthy.
In consultation with Erica, Elanny began drinking only water and eating more fruits and vegetables. Within weeks, Elanny had lost 11 pounds and was on her way to a healthier life.
For Erica, this was only the beginning as she worked to educate the student body about nutrition, fitness and mental strength. Erica formed a Student Wellness Council to aid her in her mission.
In December, the Love Your Body health fair (video) at her school was a huge success. In January, she got the school moving with a pedometer walking competition. Sahaja Meditation has been a big success reducing stress across the campus. The Teen Battle Chef program and a school garden have dominated spring activities. Currently, they are growing kale, lettuce, broccoli, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and some herbs in The Bronx.
As her exciting first year comes to an end, Erica is making plans for an even better coming school year. HealthCorps® is grateful to the New York City Council and Joel Rivera for making the HealthCorps program possible at Fordham High School.
